Pronghorn
The pronghorn is the fastest land mammal in North America and the second fastest on Earth, trailing only the cheetah. It can reach roughly 55 to 60 miles per hour (88 to 96 km/h), and unlike a big cat, it holds a blistering pace for miles rather than seconds. This rare pairing of raw speed and deep stamina makes it one of the most extraordinary runners in the animal kingdom.
Despite the common nickname "American antelope," the pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) is not a true antelope at all. It is the sole surviving member of an ancient North American family, Antilocapridae, with no close living relatives anywhere on the planet. It roams the open plains, sagebrush steppe, and deserts of western North America, from the southern prairies of Canada through the United States and into northern Mexico.
What makes the pronghorn worth a closer look is not only its pace but the story written into its body. Its outsized heart and lungs, its forward-pointing horns, and its almost telescopic eyesight all trace back to a vanished world of Ice Age predators.
Taxonomic Classification

The pronghorn belongs to the order Artiodactyla, the even-toed, hoofed mammals that also include deer, cattle, and giraffes. Within that order it stands alone as the only living species in the family Antilocapridae. Its scientific name, Antilocapra americana, was assigned by the naturalist George Ord in 1815, drawing on specimens and notes from the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804 to 1806.
Although people often call it an antelope, the resemblance to Old World antelopes is a case of convergent evolution rather than shared ancestry. True antelopes live in Africa and Asia, while the pronghorn's lineage evolved in isolation across North America over roughly 20 million years. Several relatives once shared the continent, but every one of them died out, leaving the pronghorn as a living remnant of a much larger group.
Most authorities recognize five subspecies. The nominate form (A. a. americana) is widespread across the northern and central range, while the Mexican (A. a. mexicana), Oregon (A. a. oregona), Sonoran (A. a. sonoriensis), and peninsular (A. a. peninsularis) forms occupy more restricted territory to the south and west.
Physical Description

A pronghorn is a lean, deer-sized animal built for open country. Adults stand about 32 to 41 inches (81 to 104 cm) at the shoulder and measure roughly 4.3 to 4.9 feet (1.3 to 1.5 m) nose to tail. Males weigh between 88 and 143 pounds (40 to 65 kg), while females are lighter, at about 75 to 106 pounds (34 to 48 kg). The coat is tan to reddish brown across the back and flanks, offset by bright white patches on the rump, belly, sides, and two bands across the throat.
The animal's name comes from its distinctive headgear. Both sexes can grow horns, though those of males are far larger, often around 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30 cm) long with a forward-pointing prong partway up. These structures are not quite like the horns of cattle or the antlers of deer. Each horn has a permanent bony core, but the outer keratin sheath is shed and regrown every year, a trait found in no other horned mammal. New growth begins beneath the old sheath in late autumn and pushes it off once fully formed.
Nearly every feature of the pronghorn seems tuned for speed and vigilance. Its heart, lungs, and windpipe are unusually large, allowing it to move huge volumes of oxygen to the muscles during a sprint. Its legs are long and slender, set on two-toed hooves with padded soles that absorb shock across rough ground. Its eyes, placed high and wide on the skull, are among the largest of any hoofed mammal relative to body size, granting a field of view often compared to 8x binoculars, enough to detect movement up to 4 miles (6.4 km) away. The hollow, insulating hairs of the coat can be raised or flattened to cope with prairie extremes, and the white rump hairs can be flared into a bright warning flash that distant herd-mates can read in an instant.
Range and Habitat

The pronghorn is endemic to North America, which means it occurs naturally nowhere else. Its range stretches from the southern prairie provinces of Canada, through the western and central United States, and south into the deserts of northern Mexico. Distribution within that band is patchy rather than continuous, shaped by terrain, water, and human land use.
Preferred habitat is wide, treeless country. Pronghorn do well in shortgrass and mixed-grass prairie, sagebrush steppe, chaparral, and semi-arid desert basins, generally in flat or gently rolling ground where their eyesight and speed give them the advantage. Before European colonization, an estimated 35 million pronghorn ranged across this vast open landscape. Diet

Pronghorn are herbivores with a selective, varied palate. Rather than grazing grass in bulk like bison, they browse carefully on a wide range of plants and have been described as "dainty" feeders. Forbs, the broad-leaved flowering plants of the prairie, usually make up the largest share of the diet, followed by shrubs, grasses, and legumes. In summer they favor forbs with high water content, while in winter sagebrush and other browse become the mainstay.
Like cattle and deer, the pronghorn is a ruminant. It swallows food quickly, then regurgitates and rechews the partially digested cud to pull more nutrition from tough plant material. One of its most valuable adaptations for dry country is an ability to draw most of its water from the plants it eats, so it can go long stretches without drinking. This lets it survive in arid basins where standing water is scarce.
Behavior

Pronghorn are active mainly during daylight, alternating bouts of feeding with rest and vigilance. They are social animals, gathering in loose herds that swell in winter and break into smaller groups during the breeding season. Communication runs heavily on vision. A startled animal flares its white rump patch, and the flash ripples across the herd as a silent alarm. Scent glands and vocal calls add further layers of signaling among individuals.
Speed defines the animal's response to danger. Where many prey species rely on dodging and cover, the pronghorn simply outruns almost everything on the continent, holding around 35 miles per hour (56 km/h) for miles at a stretch. This endurance evolved to escape the American cheetah (genus Miracinonyx) and other swift Ice Age hunters that vanished roughly 11,000 to 12,000 years ago. Those predators are long gone, yet the pronghorn still carries the speed they once demanded, which now serves it against coyotes, bobcats, wolves, and golden eagles.
Many populations migrate between seasonal ranges, and some undertake the second-longest land migration in North America, a round trip that can approach 300 miles (480 km). One quirk shapes these journeys. Pronghorn are reluctant to jump and prefer to duck under obstacles, so livestock fences can block ancient routes and cut herds off from winter forage.
Reproduction

The breeding season, or rut, falls in mid-September across most of the northern range and earlier in southern populations. Pronghorn are polygynous. Depending on local conditions, males either defend a fixed territory that females move through or guard a harem directly, using scent marking, calls, and horn-to-horn clashes to fend off rivals. Females are far from passive and often sample several males before choosing a mate.
Gestation lasts about 252 days, one of the longer pregnancies among animals of this size. Females give birth in late spring, most often to twins after their first year. Newborn fawns weigh only about 4 to 9 pounds (2 to 4 kg) and rely on a hider strategy, lying still and nearly scentless in vegetation while the mother forages nearby and returns to nurse. The young grow fast on rich milk. By around five days old a fawn can already outrun a person, and it stays with its mother for roughly a year. Sexual maturity comes at about 15 to 16 months, and wild pronghorn typically live around 10 years, occasionally reaching 15.
Importance to the World

As one of the dominant native grazers of the North American plains, the pronghorn helps shape the plant communities it feeds on, selectively removing forbs and browse and influencing the balance among grasses, shrubs, and flowering plants. It transfers energy up the food chain as prey for predators and scavengers, and it redistributes nutrients and seeds across the landscape as it moves. On healthy rangeland, it can even help hold down noxious weeds that cattle avoid.
The pronghorn has also become a flagship for one of the most important ideas in modern conservation, the protection of wildlife migration corridors. Its long seasonal journeys across the American West drew scientists to map exactly where the animals travel, and that research reshaped how land managers think about connected habitat. In 2008 the Path of the Pronghorn, a route running between Grand Teton National Park and the Upper Green River Valley in Wyoming, became the first federally designated wildlife migration corridor in the United States. The effort to keep that route open, through wildlife overpasses and limits on development, has since guided similar corridor protections for other big-game animals across the region.
Threats

At the species level, the pronghorn is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with a stable overall population estimated at 500,000 to 1,000,000 animals. That standing marks a hard-won recovery. From perhaps 35 million before colonization, the population crashed to fewer than 20,000 by 1924, before habitat protection and hunting regulation allowed a rebound.
The picture is far darker for two southern subspecies. The Sonoran pronghorn, found in the deserts of Arizona and northwestern Mexico, is listed as endangered, with roughly 450 animals in the United States, up from just 21 in 2002. The peninsular pronghorn of Baja California is in even greater peril, reduced to around 200 wild individuals and ranked as critically endangered.
Across the range, the main pressures come from habitat fragmentation, fences and roads that sever migration corridors, energy development, and drought linked to a changing climate. Conservation work focuses on protecting movement routes, modifying or removing barrier fencing, and captive breeding for the most imperiled subspecies. The broad recovery of the pronghorn shows what sustained management can achieve, even as its rarest forms remain a pressing concern.
